What do pigeons eat? The responsibility for nutrition is the breeder. There is an extremely large range of pigeons in pet stores, but not everyone can be administered to a certain bird. When choosing it, it is necessary to take into account in particular the development phase, season or special needs.
The growth of pigeons enjoys a renewed popularity. The growth of these animals requires adequate knowledge and one of the key problems is food for pigeons. How should these birds be fed to guarantee adequate development and operation? Undoubtedly, cereals and legumes are the basis of the diet.
What to feed young pigeons?
From the beginning, it should be noted that the pigeon diet must be adapted to their development phase. This will give them a healthy and well balanced food, which will provide them with all the ingredients necessary according to their needs in the respective phase. So what should we feed a young pigeon? Immediately after hatching, the parents play the main role in the diet. The chicks are weaned at the age of about 25 days. They are then transferred to a refuge for young people specially prepared.
The selection of an adequate power regime at this stage is very important, because it determines the performance of the animal in the subsequent stages of life. If the first day after the weaning of the chicks do not want to eat, don’t worry. Once the initial stress caused by environmental change has passed, their desire to eat will return and a day of fasting will not hurt them. On the other hand, it will be a big mistake to give too much food to the chicks.
What do the pigeon chicks eat?
To be complete, the chicks diet must be of the right type: feed, cereals, additives of phytogenic forage. The key element in the diet of young animals are carbohydrates and fats as energy sources. Another important component is the protein: a construction material for the development of the skeleton and muscles. Minerals must not be forgotten, which determine numerous processes in the body. What young pigeons eat must also be adapted to the consistency.
To begin with, birds should be served a fine food, easier to eat. Therefore, it is recommended to grind cereals and serve other products in liquid form. Meals should be given on average twice a day – in the morning and evening.
As the chicken progresses in learning to feed on their own, large cereals can be added to the mixture, for example peas, pellets, corn. Such a feed that is usually lasts a few days.
And what does he feed on a pigeon born in winter? Such birds need special care. They have limited access to the tasty food they find in their surroundings during migration. Their diet is based exclusively on what the breeder offers. Therefore, the diet should take into account in particular the increase in construction and energy requirements, as well as cereals rich in minerals, such as: for example:
● Millet (fluoride, manganese, copper, silicon),
● barley (mainly zinc),
● wheat (iron, magnesium, vitamins B, phosphorus, potassium).
What do you feed the pigeons based on the season?
With the pigeons they are feeding, it is largely determined by the season and the special conditions. Here’s how the diet should be:
● During the mating period – This is the moment when the fall of the feather takes place, which can be accompanied by lethargy and a deterioration of the appearance. Animals therefore need more energy to form a new feather. During this period, the food for pigeons is represented by mixtures with seeds and oil seeds, for example colzato, sunflower, hemp, rich sources of protein in the form of peas or pellets. During the period MuttIt is worth enriching the diet of pigeons with specially designed supplements. This is a complex of micronutrients, vitamins, minerals and ingredients for adequate protein synthesis;
● winter – This is the period in which birds must be fueled to satiety. It is not necessary to use special blends. What is important is a balanced mixture containing cereals with high protein and fat, for example corn (source of carbohydrates), sc (protein source), oil seeds, such as sunflower (source of fat). Some breeders recommend adding oats or barley;
● Spring – This is the period in which the diet must contain an extra protein, because birds become more active and need more energy. The winter mixture can be integrated with mile, wheat, hemp, rapeseed and veterinarians. A rich food for birds that will be coupled is also necessary. This diet should be introduced a week before mating.
What do wild pigeons eat?
What do wild pigeons eat? These animals must find their own food. Above all, they eat seeds and waste. They also eat what they get from people. So what does he feed the pigeons? It is certainly a bad conduct to give them bread, which is harmful to the digestive system. Bread acid has a destructive effect on the stomach, but it can also contribute to the angel wing syndrome. If we want to feed them, it is advisable to do it only with cereals or seeds.
However, ornithologists proclaim that wild pigeons are not necessary. These animals are perfectly able to find food even in winter.
