Rinite, if not treated, can cause serious complications. It is worth keeping our pets healthy and observing their behavior. If your rabbit is lethargic all day, loses your appetite and develops a flowing nose, we recommend a visit to the vet. A timely response, reduces the probability of complications and even the development of more serious diseases.
If we observe an unusual behavior or first signs of illness, we must immediately face a specialist.
Rabbits, such as rhinitis, should not be underestimated.
Rhinite with rabbit
Rhinitis in rabbits can be caused by a regular cold or by an infection from bacteria to pastorilla parasites, which the rabbits transmit together. There may be different causes, therefore a rapid and correct diagnosis is essential in this case. For example, Rinite occurs due to inadequate living conditions or during a sudden change in temperature, from heat to cold. A more serious condition is pasterallosis, which occurs from inflammation in the respiratory rabbit system. In the case of this disease, nasal secretions are often yellowish and the rabbit begins to grind.
Infectious rhinite to rabbits
An asymptomatic bacterial disease in the early stages. When the immunity of the pet decreases significantly:
- cough,
- Excessive sneezing,
- watery rhinitis,
- grunt,
- In appearance,
- letargia.
The characteristic of the infectious rhinitis of the rabbits is a yellow and thick nasal secretion that attacks the fur. Through obstructed breathing, the rabbit begins to grind. Conjunctivitis and inflammation of the internal and medium ear are also common.
If not treated in time, the infectious rhinitis of the rabbit can evolve into pneumonia, which in turn is difficult to cure. It is worth reacting quickly and, if we see that our rabbit has changed its behavior and has no appetite, we must go immediately to the vet.
Remember that even the transport of a sick rabbit must go. The exposure of your pet to additional temperature fluctuations can even worsen its conditions even more. For this reason, we should get specialized carriers for rabbits and, moreover, isolation with hay.
Rhinite at Rabbit – How is it treated?
The treatment of rhinitis on the rabbit should be under the guidance of a vet, which will prescribe the appropriate drug. However, we must also take care of the diet and the hygiene of the animal. Clean the rabbit cage regularly, take care of the degree of humidity in the room and in the temperature. Pay attention to the integration of the rabbit and the variation of the daily diet with dried or fresh fruit and vegetables. It is also advisable to reach food with minerals to help increase the animal’s immunity. It is recommended not to feed the rabbit with salad and spinach for a period of time, as they contain a large amount of bones.
The conditions of the rabbit are aggravated by inadequate accommodation conditions, such as a dirty cage or the lack of a clean sheet. Even contact with infected animals does not help to improve the condition. It is better to isolate your pet from other rabbits for this period.
A visit to the vet is the first most important thing to do. Subsequently, even home remedies and adequately prepared integration can help. We are not afraid, especially during this period and in the autumn/winter season, to increase the intake of vitamins and minerals or in the form of tablets or liquids.
Remedies at home for rabbit rhinitis
The flowing nose of a rabbit must be consulted by a specialist; In some cases, in addition to the prescribed medicines, the veterinarian may recommend further domestic remedies to help rabbits breathe more easily.
The most popular methods are:
- Inhalationwhich have a cleaning and decongestion effect of the nose. We can traditionally perform them at home using a bowl of hot water. It is a good idea to add herbs, such as mint, thyme or chamomile. Place the infusion prepared near the cage and cover everything with a cloth so that the rabbit can inhale the healing vapors.
- Essential oilsThey are another solution that, if used regularly, can give results. Sprinkle a towel wet with oils or add them to a humidifier.
- Do not forget the diet and vitamins to compensate for any deficiency of micro and macroelements. Which will significantly reduce the susceptibility to diseases and inflammation in the rabbit.
Domestic remedies for rhinitis are practical solutions that do not require much money. It is worth using them after talking to your doctor. We should remember that we should never treat a rabbit independently and alone.
However, the base in any case is to visit a specialist who will prescribe the necessary drugs and only then can we start using home methods.
