The story of the cat with the short legs

The first records of cats with short legs come from books and recordings dating back to 1944. The generations of these cats probably disappeared during the Second World War and 1983, in Louisiana, are considered the official place where the race began. So Sandra Hochendel found two cats with short gesture, but wandering legs. The cats received names: BlackBerry Black and Blueberry Gray. Unique and surprising from their body shape, cats also gained a nickname: Munchkins, after the cute and small creatures of the Oz magician, from which Sandra was a fan. Blackberry gave birth to 4 kittens – 2 of the normal constitution, 2 with short legs. A female cat with short legs, named Toulouse, was given to Sandra’s friend. It did not spend much time before the neighborhood appeared many wild cats with short legs: the chicks of Toulouse with various male cats, not always tanned. Toulouse owner quickly regretted the decision to give up the not tried cat, because, due to their body structure, the little ones were not going well outdoors.

Studies in the 90s indicate that a mutation in the dominant gene for the small breed occurred in a natural and spontaneously and affects only the long bones of the cat members. The cause of its appearance is unknown, but it still causes short legs in half of the cat chicks with this gene.

Munchkin cat is not recognized by most felinological associations. In 1994, American Tica accepted the new race, being so far the only organization that has taken this step. From the United States, cats arrived in France, where they became very popular among cat fans.

Munchkin – Silhouette

Munchkin are small cats, which weigh between 2 and 4 kg. The females are slightly lighter and more delicate than males. The first distinctive feature of these cats are their short arts. They are straight and muscle. The rear ones are longer than the previous ones. The crooked legs, aimed inwards or outwards and too crouched are unacceptable. The legs are quite small and round.

Munchkins, like a crossing between the so -called dachshunds, did not deviate too much from other proportions. Their body is quite enormous, ending up with a long and sharp tail. The chest is developed, wide. Too large a curvature of the vertebral column disqualifies cats. Munchkin’s head is relatively large, in the form of a wedge. The ears are uniformly spaced, large, vertical, which end slightly round. The eyes are wide, in the shape of a walnut. Any color is acceptable, it is not related to the color of the fur.

This breed can enter the version with short or semilung hair. All colors, reasons and fur phases are acceptable. The variety with short hair is characterized by a hair with great elasticity and a luxurious consistency. The variety with long hair, on the other hand, is smooth and silky. There is a slight hole in the head and neck area.

Munchkin’s Care

Munchkin’s cat’s care is not demanding. Short -haired cats should be combed with a pet with fine teeth a few days or once a week to keep their beautiful look. This will help remove the fallen hair and also to increase the glow of the fur. Munchkins’ Semilungro fur should be combed every day to avoid disordered.

The regular cutting of claws is recommended. The long ones open easily and it is certainly difficult for felines to detach themselves when this happens.

The diet of these cats is very important. They tend to gain weight and, given their body shape, even a slight overweight is very dangerous. On the other hand, some lovers of cats and guards of this breed argue that, due to their short feet, these cats often suffer from spine and hips, as well as frequent rheumatic pain. It is a fact that lordosis, or an excessive curvature of the spine, is more common between this breed than in the case of the others.
The life expectancy of Cat Munchkin is aged 15 to 18.

These cats should not be coupled with other breed cats, as this is equivalent to a very high rate of embryonic mortality. Only their crossing with a domestic cat – a race cat is allowed. The fur or color does not matter, which is why the Munchkin are found with both short and medium length hair.

The price of a Munchkin can be very high. In the United States, the cost of a Munchkin varies from $ 1,000 to $ 2,000. Munchkin’s legal reproduction is very rare, currently only in the United States.
