History of the English Mastiff dog breed
The English mastiff dog has its origins about 2,000,000 years ago. His ancient ancestors came from Central Asia and came to what is the United Kingdom today with the Phoenicians, around the 6th century BC
At the time of the attack of the Romanians in England, Cesare himself was happy and at the same time amazed by the power, by the size of these dogs and their tireless struggle in war battles. The Romans brought the mastiffs with them and used them enthusiastically – for their joy – in animal struggles. From Rome, the British mastiffs have spread throughout Europe, where their efficiency in hunting has been appreciated and served the population as hunting dogs.
In 1885 a canine standard was developed for the breed of the English mastiff. The appearance of these dogs has changed a bit throughout their history.
In the twentieth century, the number of English mastiffs in the world has decreased quickly, but over the years, more and more people have been interested in the uniqueness of the breed and the percentage of multiplication has increased.
The English mastiff is often called colloquial British mastiff.
Mastiff English – Weight, height and life
The English mastiff, immediately after the Tibetan mastiff and the Mastiff Napoletan, is part of the group of the largest dog breeds in the world. Only its body structure is rather impressive. The English mastiff can weigh up to 100 kg and can reach about 80 cm in the male and 75 cm in the female.
The silhouette of the English mastiff is elongated, falling into a rectangle. The rear is straight and strong. The chest is wide. The mastiff’s legs are huge, straight and muscle. The tail is long, with a high insert and narrows.
The head is very impressive: strong, angular and wrinkled. The prominent ears are very distant, in the shape of V and must be close to the body. The neck of the English mastiff should not remain much skin.
The acceptable color of the fur is yellowish, tiger or silver.
How to take care of an English mastiff?
British Mastiff has a short fur, which does not require special care. It only needs regular brushing. In Petshop, the combs are available for short breeds. It is also advisable not to wash the dog too often; Once a month it is sufficient.
As for other aspects of the care, we must pay particular attention, supports, which appear above all around the bones and the wrists. If we notice the first traces of supports, we must go to a specialist as soon as possible, who will order the appropriate ointment for lubrication. It is worth noting that the mastiffs, due to their weight, are often prone to the hip dysplasia.
We also take care of the jackets, that is, to cut them regularly with a dog pliers.
Mastiff English – character
The English mastiff has a relatively delicate character, sometimes even negligent to external factors. He is a very faithful dog that is quickly hosted in places and a new teacher. The English mastiff is a calm dog that is well understood with children, we just have to pay attention to foreigners and other dogs. Despite its delicate disposition, if I feel the danger, it can start behaving aggressively, therefore a fair training plays an important role in this case. Of puppy, at the English mastiff he must be taught basic commands and listening, because in adulthood, with his weight, he can hurt others. Therefore, the English mastiff is recommended for already expert breeders, who are able to dedicate enough time to grow the dog.
However, the mastiffs are extremely affectionate, friendly and caring and often do not even surrender to their masters. Too intense game tires the dog, so it is advisable to dose outdoor activities according to the needs of your animal.
British Mastiff does not tolerate solitude well; He likes the company of humans and other animals, so it is not advisable to leave him alone for long periods of time.
Its main feature is its protective nature, it is a guard dog, its ancestors often had the task of defending the territories and protecting their masters from intruders. Nowadays, even living in a domestic environment, the English mastiff shows a great availability to defend himself and, if he sees any danger, reacts immediately.
Mastiff English – Nutrition
Mastiffs can eat a lot. Being large dogs, they have increased energy and nutritional needs. It is recommended to feed your dog with high quality dog food, with a high content of meat and few filling substances. Only such a composition will allow the dog to feel tired quickly and the custodian will not be surprised by the quantity eaten.
It is worth using supplements and vitamins to improve the health, skin and bones of our pet. In terms of power frequency, two to three times a day is sufficient for an adult English mastiff. It is important to pay attention to the breaks and rest before and after the meal to avoid the twist of the stomach, to which this breed is subject.
English Mastiff – Price and availability
The price of an English mastiff is around 1,000 euros abroad, or about 5,000-6,000 pounds in Romania. The availability of the English mastiff even in the United Kingdom is extremely limited. Despite the great interest, it is difficult to find reliable breeders who have mastiff chickens. If you decide to buy such a dog, it is worth checking the places where you want to buy them.
It is important to remember that the purchase of an English mastiff puppy is not everything. The monthly maintenance cost of an English mastiff is an expense of about 600 Ron. This must mainly do with the large amount of food that the dog eats.
