Dogue de Bordeaux is one of the most popular Molosser dogs in Poland. The distinctive fur, of an intense red, with a great and muscular body of the dog is unmistakable. Dogue de Bordeaux once fought with bears, wolves, bulls, today it is a devoted and delicate guard of entire families, but with a fierce guard. Is such a combination possible? How does Dogue de Bordeaux in the domestic environment?

It is an old breed, which comes – like the other Molosser dogs – directly from the Tibetan dog. Dogue de Bordeaux was mentioned for the first time in the 14th century. Dogs of this type have been described as huge, but very useful with people. Dogue de Bordeaux was a fighting dog, he took part in the great hunting hunt – including bears hunt, helps to graze animals and also protect the animals that went to the massacre. In the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, it also became known as the slaughter dog, because it became an integral part of the work in these units. Dogue de Bordeaux also offered entertainment for people, because he fought with courage and long in the Roman arenas. The breed was very popular and was easily adopted in most houses. This has changed with the appearance of the French Revolution, when the dog Dogue de Bordeaux was exterminated due to, among others, of the fear that inspires and the large number of specimens. The race survived only in the south of France. There, the population of dogs managed to recover. Great in Germany played an important role in restoring the race. Dogue de Bordeaux even participated in the formation of the Argentine dog.

Dogue de Bordeaux obtained its standard in 1863 and was recorded in group II Pincher, Schnauzer, Molosser, mountain dogs and Swiss cattle dogs and in section 2 Molosser. The first copies arrived in Poland in 1992, but at the beginning they did not find a group of admirers. The popularity of the race blossomed a few years later, when combat dogs became known and you want in Poland. Currently, the Bordeaux dog is a relatively common dog, especially in the suburbs and houses, where he plays the role of the guard dog.

What does the dogue de Bordeaux dog look like?

Dogue de Bordeaux is a great race. An adult individual reaches a body weight of at least 50 kg and a height in the niche between 60 and 68 cm. The breed is sexually dwelling, the females are about 5 kg lighter and 5 cm more short than the males.
Dogue de Bordeaux is enormous, corpulent and muscle. The silhouette is inscribed in a rectangle, the head is very wide and large. The rear is slightly arched, with the lumbar region and the rump descends to a low tail. The limbs are huge, the tail is long, very thick at the base. The abdomen is slightly curled. The chest is very large, with a greater circumference of the height of the dog on the ass. Robust and strong neck.

The shape of the head is characteristic of the breed: both on and anterior, it recalls a trapeze. The skin is strongly wavy, forming thick folds. The foot is strongly marked, with an important line of previous front bite. Dogue de Bordeaux has small and very distant eyes. The ears are small and very high, not very mobile. The nose is slightly withdrawn.

The color allowed for Bordeaux Dogue is monochromatic, with any shade of red. A mask – black or brown – on the head is allowed. In the case of black signs, it shouldn’t be very large and the nose should be black. In the case of a brown mask, the dog’s nose and eyelids must be brown.

The dog’s fur in this breed is short, but relatively soft.

The Bordeaux dog presents many of the characteristics of Molosser. It is a balanced dog, with a threshold of high excitability. To be challenged, he needs strong stimuli or signs to attack. Dogue de Bordeaux defends their resources and people with ferocity, but does not attack first for no reason. On the other hand, if an attack is reached, Dogue de Bordeaux will not return and fight until the end. After all, this stubbornness allowed him to win the battles against his strongest rivals: bears, wolves or bulls.

Dogue de Bordeaux is strongly attached to her family and defends her against foreigners. Despite his strong personality, this dog is a delicate and affectionate guard. However, it needs safe and coherent education, but based on a positive strengthening formation. The Bordeaux dog is dominant by its nature; With an unstable master, he can start presenting destructive characteristics. In the case of lacking socialization, dogs in this breed tend to develop the anxiety of separation. It is useful to get used to the puppy with a cage, which is a precious accessory for training, especially to fight dogs.

Dogue de Bordeaux has a previous bite. With this position of the jaw, there is a tendency of an excessive accumulation of tartar and also to make it difficult to chew the food, in particular the dry one. When you feed your Bordeaux dog, it is advisable to rely on the dog’s barf or wet food. However, it must be taken into consideration that, in large dogs, the number of canned foods will be enormous. It is necessary to periodically clean your dog’s teeth. It is better to use oral hygiene napkins or toothbrush for dogs.

The price of a puppy of dogue of Bordeaux is around 6,000 Ron. The better the breeder has a better reputation and the dogs have won the most important titles, the greater the price for a chicken. An additional criterion is the decision of the subsequent reproduction of the puppy in question. A puppy of dogue Bordeaux for reproduction or coupling will cost more than a «company» dog.

It is important to note that a puppy cannot be taken from his mother until the age of 12, because this is the time to learn the basic elements of life and behavior in the flock. Dogs taken previously are more likely to develop behavioral problems. Before buying a puppy, make sure the breeder is recorded at FCI, visit the dog’s place of residence and talk to it to clarify any doubt you have.

The monthly cost for maintaining a Bordeaux dog is around 500 Ron.
