Diarrhea in cats is a condition that can have many different causes. Some are trivial, so you can treat your quadruped with domestic remedies. Sometimes, however, diarrhea accompanies serious diseases. Therefore, the master should never underestimate this symptom.
The feces of a healthy and adequately fed cat should have a firm consistency. The animal usually eliminates them once a day. A cat suffering from diarrhea makes its needs much more often and its chair is soft, watery or mucilagosa.
Causes of diarrhea in cats
Cat diarrhea is not a disease, but a symptom of the disease. To treat the animal, it is necessary to determine the cause of the condition, although it also deserves to act symptomatically. The arrest of the diarrhea will protect the dehydration of the cat and improve your well.
Depending on the causes of diarrhea in the cat, its course can differ. Short -term diarrhea, which lasts about one day and is not accompanied by other symptoms, is a mild form. The possible causes of this condition include:
- the sudden change of food,
- the inappropriate quantity or quality of the table,
- Food poisoning (after consuming altered foods or poisonous plants for the cat),
- Irritation of the digestive system, for example by a foreign body or indigesible foods for the cat (it is worth knowing that most adult cats do not digest lactose, therefore the cause of diarrhea can be the consumption of milk),
- reaction to the administration of a drug,
- Vaccine,
- parasites,
- strong stress (e.g. in relation to the change of housing).
Diarrhea in a small kitten that has not yet been reduced is often caused by parasites that live in the digestive tract.
If the cat’s poisoning is suspected, go immediately to the vet. Ideally, you should also show the veterinarian a piece of the plant that suspected has eaten the cat. Platage poisoning is a state that endangers the life of the animal and counts every minute.
The causes of diarrhea in cats can be much more serious. Strong diarrhea can accompany viral or bacterial infections. Infectious diseases in cats that are often accompanied by diarreFiv) and infectious peritonitis (FIP). Diarrhea is also caused by Clostridium Perfringens or Bacteria Escherichia coli. In the case of an infection, diarrhea can persist up to two weeks and therefore takes on its acute form. It is often accompanied by other symptoms, for example vomiting, loss of appetite, fever, blood, apathy.
Long -term diarrhea in cats is often caused by a serious digestive system disease. If the condition reappears for several weeks, it can be a sign of liver or kidney failure or even an ongoing cancer process.
Domestic remedies for diarrhea in cats
The appearance of the cat diarrhea should be a signal for the master to carefully observe the animal. If the animal behaves normally: it is active, it does not lose your appetite, the third eyelid is not visible, there are no other symptoms of illness, you can try not to feed it for several hours (remembering to provide constant access to fresh water), but no more than 8-10 hours, because the liver begins. Then keep an easily digestible diet for a few days. Symptomatic diarrhea can be prevented by administering the available preparations, previously establishing the administration and dosage of the drug with a veterinarian. The light of diarrhea disappears after a day.
How to treat diarrhea in cats?
If diarrhea is accompanied by other symptoms or persists for more than 24 hours, do not treat the cat alone. You have to go to the vet, which will diagnose the source of the condition and recommend adequate treatment. The doctor will ask a series of questions to the owner. If the suspicion of infection occurs, it can also request the performance of the analysis of the seat and the morphology of the blood. If symptoms suggest more serious medical conditions, an ultrasound may be requested.
The treatment of feline diarrhea depends on its causes. Your veterinarian may recommend changing diet, switching, antibiotic or even surgery. In the case of chronic diarrhea, the cat’s body is rapidly exhausted. Therefore, in any case, the therapy should be accompanied by the intense hydration of the animal, often also administering drips with electrolytes, vitamins and proteins. It is also advisable to use probiotics to complete the intestinal flora.
