Cornish Rex – The story of the race

Cornish Rex is one of the modern races of cats. This means that its story is relatively short, which has allowed to document the exact day on which Rex Cornish kitten was discovered. This dates back to 21.07.1950, in Cornwall. From here and the second name of the race, Cornish Rex. The first name refers to the cat’s fur, reminiscent of that of the REX rabbits.

The discovery of the breed took place on the farm of the farmer’s farmer Nina Ennnnnnismore in Cornwall, mentioned above. In a chicken of a female cat – Serena – there was a kitten with a constitution and a consistency of the unusual fur. He was significantly different from his brothers, as well as his mother. It resembled an oriental cat, long legs, a slender body, a large but flat head and huge ears. On the other hand, his fur was also wavy. This orange male cat with Bianco received the name Kallbunker and gave birth to an entire Rex family from Cornwall. Nina, the owner, brought the cat to a genetic test, which confirmed that it was a spontaneous genetic mutation that influenced the appearance of the first Rex Cornwall. The veterinarian present suggested that the male cat was coupled with his mother, Serena, to perpetuate the mutation. The owner did this, which started the blood pressure in Rex Cats. This combination gave birth to a kitten with a shape of the body and a similar fur – Poldhu.

In the coming years, both male cats were missed with their mother, as well as Siamese, British and Burmese cats. In 1956, Kallununker – the first Rex Cornish – died. The achievement was made only in Poldh. Around 1975, the first kittens in these chicks were brought to the United States. There, they were crossed with Havana cats, American, Burmese and Siamese, that is, it raises themselves slightly different from those crossed in the United Kingdom.

In the coming years, the number of cats of the Cornish Rex began to fall suddenly. This was due to the difficulties of coupling, the low survival rates of cats, to the fact of being born with a straight fur, above all, the genetic defects caused by consanguineration.

Finally, Cornish Rex was recognized in the United Kingdom in 1967 and in the United States in 1962 by CFA and 1979 from Tica.
