History of the Calana Raggio Pass
The dogs of the Catalan shepherd who descend from the Tibetan terrier dog, which is the ancestor of most shepherd dogs with long hair. The ancestors of the dogs of the Catalan shepherd emigrated with the population of Asia to Türkiye and Europe. The exact date of these migrations is not known. What is certain, however, is that in the already targeted areas, the Catalan shepherd’s dog has been appreciated for its performance characteristics and has also participated in the formation of new breeds of dogs. This was influenced by crossings with local, terrestrial and environmental dogs, which have had an impact on the physical and mental characteristics of the animals. The Catalan shepherd dog gave birth to the Catalan dog of Spanish shepherd, the French pyrena shepherd dog, the Portuguese shepherd dog Dao de Aires.
The dog, known today as the Catalan shepherd dog, served the population as a guard for sheep and other animals. He excelled in weather and environmentally unfavorable weather conditions and specialized in working on rocky and difficult soils. In addition, the dogs of the Catalan shepherd actively participated in the Spanish war, where they acted as connecting officers.
The first standard of the breed was created in 1924. The first copies of the race arrived in Poland in 2005, but did not acquire the great popularity they enjoy in Germany and in the Scandinavian countries.
Catalan shepherd – Appearance
Catalan shepherd dogs are not a breed of large dogs. Adults reach 47 – 55 cm at Greaben, with a body weight of about 20 kg. The females are slightly smaller and lighter than males, but sexual dwelling is not high.
The Silhouette of the Catalan shepherd is engraved in a rectangle. The trunk is elongated and the rear is right. The front legs are straight and the rear ones are busy. The deep chest allows high resistance. The head of the Catalan shepherd is large, with large and black eyes and large ears that fall slightly and are set up. The dogs of the Catalan shepherd used to cut the queues. Currently, dogs can have a long tail, a short tail with a maximum length of 10 cm or without a tail.

Is there a Catalan shepherd with straight hair? YES! This variety rarely meets, but is as acceptable as possible based on the race standard.
The Catalan shepherd with long hair has wavy hair, which are close to the body. The color itself in both varieties is the same and characteristic of the breed. It is a combination of black, white, gray, brown and brown hair, which give a gray Gafe.

The resistance and durability of the life of the Catalan shepherd dog
The dogs of the Catalan shepherd enjoy a good resistance and resistance capacity. This was influenced by the history of the race. The immunity of the dog can be stimulated by adding Omega 3 acids to the diet, but this is not necessary. If nourished with a balanced food, the dog feels very well and lives a long and healthy life. The average life expectancy of a Catalan shepherd is 15 years old.

This breed can have a predisposition to joint problems or, in the worst case, joint dysplasia. Here it is necessary to prevent the dog’s era. Food for the Catalan shepherd should contain ingredients to strengthen the dog’s osteoarticular system, such as glucosamine and chondroitin.
Care of the Catalan shepherd fur
The Catalan shepherd fur is easy and pleasant to take care. The Catalan shepherd with long hair should be carefully combed every few days with a comb or glove: by touching the deepest layer of hair, the Catalan shepherd with short hair should be combed with a glove once a week to collect the fallen hair.
The physical requirements of the Catalan shepherd dog
The Catalan shepherd has no high physical requirements and is not too active a race. For this reason, it excels in canine sports like agility. Three walks a day (two long walks) will adapt to the race. This dog is very good both in the apartment and in the large house, where he can make his instincts and protect the property.
Catalano Shepherd – character
Catalan shepherd dogs are extremely balanced in behavior. Are they perfect dogs? It may seem yes and many will be. It is a race that is located anywhere and will be a good dog both in a small apartment and as a guardian of a large property. Catalan dogs are silent and not very dazed. Non -conflictuality is expressed with dogs and foreigners. Here, the Catalan shepherd dog shows their curiosity, but does not approach or began contact alone. These dogs love children, they are happy to play with them and are very protective. Only interactions with cats can be a challenge for this race. Being pastor and herd dogs, they can have an excessive desire to trace smaller animals. This behavior can be bypassed by choosing a puppy of a custodian where cats and dogs are shown with them.
The Catalan dog is a family and loyal to its people. He likes to train together, but he needs some time to improve his new skills. Despite its subordination towards the family, its independence can come to light in some situations. The Catalan shepherd shares many characteristics of pack dogs. He is alert and can be found in a guard dog, observing a beat of eyelashes in his environment. He is a fast and agile dog. It can be recommended for families with children, moderately active and single.
Catalan shepherd – The price of a dog
The price for a Catalan shepherd dog oscillates around 4000 PLN. In Poland, the breed is not popular, there are only a few keys to this breed recorded in FCI. Therefore, you will have to wait a few months for a Catalan puppy.
A starting set for a puppy costs about 500 Ron, while the monthly maintenance of a dog in this breed is an expense of about 400 Ron. Every two months, it is necessary to add the costs related to veterinary prophylaxis – exams, vaccinations and inspections.
In addition, you should always have financial safety for unexpected expenses.
