British Shorthair Cat - Features, Care, Health (Cat Encyclopedia)

According to legend, British cats arrived in England with Roman legions. They have been appreciated due to hunting skills. Over time, their unusual appearance has started to be appreciated. Currently, British cats are available in over 150 chromatic versions.

British Cat – The characteristics of the breed

British cats are friendly, calm, patient and very intelligent. Have a strong character and a moderate temperament. I usually choose a family member as a custodian, but since aggression is not characteristic, they are also suitable for children.

British cats are medium or large cats, weigh 3-5 kg, males 4-8 kg. They have a robust and muscular body, with a large round head – with well -developed characteristics and cheeks. The body is compact, with short legs and strong and a thick tail. The fur is short, soft and dense, slightly soft, like the tap. These cats meet in about 150 chromatic versions! The fur can be a color (blue, black, red, white, chocolate, lilac, cream), two color, cigarette in all the base colors, chinchillà, shady silver, silver tabby, color of the carapace, smoky, colorpoint. The eyes depend on the color of the fur, but usually they are brown-rame, orange or gold.

Care of the British cat

The British cat does not require excessive care: this is limited to the normal brushing of the fur during periods of applause, the control of the ears and the claws.

The cat’s eyes should also be washed regularly, due to the frequent tears and the risk of overloading tears.

Health of British cats

The British Shorthair breed is characterized by good health. The highest risks include hypertrophic cardiomyopathy – a serious genetic disease. The disease may not have symptoms for many years, so it is always worth a preventive genetic test in this direction. British cats can also be affected by congenital or less hydrocephalic or hemophilia polycycistic renal diseases.
In British cats, the obstruction of tears canali is common, because they belong to brachycephaly breeds, that is, with the abbreviated muzzle, although it is not extreme as in the Persian cat. This manifests itself from excessive tears of the eyes.
British cats are subject to overweight, so the diet should be observed compared to other breeds.

The average life expectancy of British cats is 15-20 years. About 82% of British Shorthair cats live up to 10 years and from 54% to 12.5 years and more.

The character of British cats

The British cat is cheerful and friendly. It is neither peel nor strong. Miauna rarely presents himself from the moments in which he asks for his favorite snacks or the dose of comfort requested. It can easily support comfort – although it is not typical of comfort and sometimes it needs peace and distance – she doesn’t like being worn in her arms. On the other hand, he stands out for loyalty and willingly spend his time in the owner’s company, often following him as a dog. British Shorthair is a courageous, sociable and peaceful cat. He lives in harmony with other animals and quickly adapts to changes.

He does not need to take walks and prefers to live in the intimacy of his home. It does not show the desire to climb: it will be happier to spend the quiet evenings on the sofa with the family.

The temperament of the British cat changes as they grow. Small kittens are usually a volcano of energy: they are everywhere. As they mature, they become calm and balanced.
