The cats, by their nature, take care of maintaining the fur clean and, therefore, spend a considerable part of the time to wash the fur with a difficult language. But what happens then with dead hair and the dirt that our quadruns lick on their fur? All of these go directly to their digestive system and are naturally eliminated with stool or returned in the form of bitons – which is why the cat’s hair is physiologically normal. However, there are situations in which this process is disturbed and our cat is in real danger due to the hair that remains in the digestive system.
What races of cats are most exposed to the risk of forming fur ghosts?
The most exposed to risk are the long races of fur, as well as those with the substrate often, because they develop the simplest pilobester, that is, the hair gems that can block the digestive tract. However, short fur cats can have such problems, especially during the intense mulching and during periods of illness, when a greater quantity of hair is lost. There are also individuals who suffer hygiene, sometimes on a nervous background, which can lead to the accumulation of hair in the stomach and in the intestine of our patrons. If we have a pet in one of the risk groups, we must keep an eye on in order not to neglect the first symptoms of gastrointestinal obstruction.
What are the symptoms?
The symptoms of the block mainly depend on the size of the formated hair and if they are in the stomach or have entered the intestine, causing their obstruction. In the case of the irritating effect of the pilobes on the gastric mucosa, we can see inefficient attempts to regurgitate the food or vomiting content after eating and drinking. Our pet gradually weakens and the appetite is generally limited. When the hair reach the intestine, we reach the disorders in the transport of food content, constipation, apathy, lack of appetite, flatulence and a radical deterioration of the general state of our pet.
If a block is suspected, the vet can prescribe further tests, such as the ultrasound of the abdominal cavity or the radiography of the contrast, to confirm the diagnosis. In easier cases, treatment methods are prescribed to facilitate the expulsion of hair gems, mainly administering ad hoc lubricants, such as unlocking the pasta, rectal suppositories of glycerin. Often, however, cats reach the veterinarian in serious conditions of blocking the digestive system, which can request the stabilization of the condition by administering drips and when the hair balls reach a large size, they are removed from surgery.
How do we prevent the block with cat fur gems?
As with most health problems, prevention is the most important. This is particularly important in the cats of the races subject to the formation of gems and those that in the past have obstruction of the digestive system forming fur gems. There are many ways to prevent Pilobesor’s formation. The basic work is the regular care of the fur by brushing it with the appropriate brushes and comb, chosen based on the type of fur, which will protect the digestive system of our animal so that it is not burdened by the natural fall of the dead hair. This is particularly important in periods of excessive applause, mainly in spring and early summer. Unfortunately, not all cats allow you to be combed, which makes this type of treatment very difficult, both at home and in specialized salons. Another natural protective method is to provide our pet to access the special grass that helps to continually remove hair from the stomach and intestine. Ready seeds are available on the market that allow the growth of herbs to support the correct functioning of our cat’s digestive system. We can also choose between a wide range of food against fur Which contains a large amount of fiber and substances that slide easily, which facilitates the daily elimination of the ghemi. If we do not decide on this type of food, it is worth buying a pasta against fur gems, whose dose is adapted according to the fact that our cat requires intensive treatment or preventive protection. You can also integrate with delights that contain compounds that help to clean the stomach and the intestine, but in the case of increased risk, it should not be the basis of the protection offered to the cat. Among the owners there is regular administration of oil oils or paraffins, which is not recommended, especially in the case of long -term administration, due to the negative impact on the liver and pancreas and on the adverse effect on adequate absorption mechanism in some intestinal compounds in the body. In my practice, I also meet the idea of administering the laxative cat, which I absolutely do not recommend due to the risk of piercing the intestine in case of blocking it.
Usually, the excessive accumulation of fur in the cat’s digestive system is limited only to the discomfort of recurring constipation, but there are situations in which the health and even the life of our pet are in danger. Therefore, daily prophylaxis and careful observation are so important to capture the first symptoms of gastrointestinal obstruction.
